Aims of the Department

·         To create an environment that encourages curiosity, interest and a love of learning in music

·         To provide equality of opportunity for all pupils to develop their particular talent, irrespective of gender, race, religious belief, social class, culture or any special need.

·         To employ that all pupils have equal access to music and to experience success and enjoyment in their music.

·         To enable pupils to see music as a source of pleasure and an important part of their leisure activities.

·         To develop personal and social skills

·         To stimulate and develop an appreciation and enjoyment of music through an active involvement in performance, composition, listening and appraising.

·         To foster a sense of responsibility, self respect and respect for others, based on reasoned set of attitudes, values and beliefs.

 

Description of the curriculum

Key Stage 3

Topics covered:

Recorder, Tin whistle, Keyboard, The Elements of Music, Graphic Scores, Instruments of the Orchestra, Melody and Chords,  Pop Music, Jazz, Rap, Music and The Media, Samba

Key Stage 4

Pupils who opt for music at this level complete either CCEA GCSE or a BTEC in Performing Arts

Key Stage 5

Pupils complete CCEA AS and A2 exams

Music Teacher, Composer, Musician, Singer, Conductor, Television Producer, Radio Producer, Sound Engineer, Television/ Radio Presenter, Music Therapist, Music Critic, Manager/ Administrator for an Orchestra/ Opera/ Ballet Company, Music Publisher, Music Retailer, Music Librarian

Irish Traditional Group

Percussion Ensemble

These groups perform both in school and the wider community at various stages throughout the school year.

 

Achievements (curricular)

In the past one of our students received an award for being the top A Level music candidate in Northern Ireland

We consistently achieve a 90% + pass rate (A* - C) at GCSE and A level
