Personal Development

KS3 Personal Development

Personal Development is a process that involves the entire world of the young person.

We describe Personal Development as:

‘Encouraging each child to become personally, emotionally, socially and physically

effective, to lead healthy, safe and fulfilled lives and to become confident, independent

and responsible citizens, making informed and responsible choices and decisions

throughout their lives.’ (N. Ireland Curriculum)

Holy Cross College can play a significant part in helping pupils to cope with the challenges of

everyday living and helping them in their development toward adulthood.

Personal Development is concerned with:

  • knowledge;

  • attitudes;

  • skills;

  • relationships;

  • behaviour that can be utilised in and outside the classroom;

  • Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities;

  • emotional awareness;

  • values; and

  • life skills.

The three key areas are explained below

Exploring Self Awareness provides opportunities to consider the importance of self confidence and self esteem to physical and emotional/mental health throughout life.

Exploring Personal Health provides opportunities to understand the importance of recognising and managing factors that may influence physical and emotional/mental health throughout life.

Exploring Relationships provides opportunities to understand the importance of forming and maintaining relationships to physical and emotional/mental health throughout life.
